In order to make a dressing, first of all, the hygiene of the environment, materials and the person who will do the dressing must be ensured. Firstly, people should wash their hands and provide all hygiene conditions by wearing gloves. Dry dressing is a type of dressing and is usually done for simple wounds. Here, care should be taken to ensure that the wound does not stick to the cloth.
The materials to be used during dressing are sterilised and the materials suitable for the wound are selected. After the hands are sterilised and gloves are put on, the wound is exposed and the materials on the wound are wetted with the solution and removed. The gauze and cotton to be used are held with forceps. The wound is cleaned with the help of gauze and finally the wound is closed again by applying the appropriate ointment to the wound. In our Clinic, which provides emergency examination service, dressing procedures are provided in the most sterile environments and with the most sterile materials.
Purpose of Dressing
Dressing has several different purposes.
Stopping bleeding wounds outside the body is achieved by placing a dry dressing on the wound and applying pressure by hand or by compressing and applying pressure with the help of a bandage. This process is defined as pressure dressing.
Pus and blood may come from the skin or wound surface. In addition, an abscess formed somewhere in the body may have opened to the surface of the body. In such cases, blood and pus are absorbed and removed from the wound with the dressing applied to the wound surface.
The dressing also protects the wound from external factors and prevents contamination of clothes and belongings.
The burn dressing reduces pain and loss of blood fluid as it cuts off the relationship between the burned area and the air. It also prevents inflammation by preventing the burn from encountering microbes from outside.
The area is allowed to rest with a soft dressing, plaster or similar fixation material.
Dressings can also be applied to prevent wound formation. For example, adhesive layers can be used to prevent the formation of wounds as a result of a shoe strike.
Types of Dressings
Dressings according to the nature of the dressing
The protective dressing is used to protect the wound from external influences and the wound usually does not bleed or drain. This prevents germs from coming into contact with the wound.
The absorbent dressing is made to absorb the discharge from the wound.
A pressure dressing is used to stop bleeding and reduce swelling.
Dressings according to the degree of moistness
Dry dressing is a dressing made by dry application of dressing material on the wound. It is mostly used as a protective dressing.
Wet dressing is especially effective in inflamed wounds. It prevents the formation of crust on the wound and allows the cells to multiply in a humid environment and cover the wound surface.
Dressings whether the wound surface is covered or not
Open dressing is the method in which the wound is not covered to form a crust on the wound surface. Wound healing is slower than with a closed dressing.
Closed dressing is the method in which the wound surface is covered.
